PE funds are only accessible to institutional investors or the uber-rich

Not true. Some private equity funds are listed on bourses, such as the London Stock Exchange and Johannesburg Stock Exchange, and are accessible to ordinary investors.

It is true however that there are far more private equity funds that are not listed on a stock exchange and are therefore not easily accessible by ordinary investors.

Many people have exposure to private equity and real estate funds through investments that have been made by their pension funds.
