EU Commission refers Malta to Court of Justice over investor citizenship scheme

The European Commission has referred Malta to the Court of Justice of the European Union for its investor citizenship scheme, known as “golden passports”.

The Commission believed granting EU citizenship in return for predetermined payments or investments without a genuine link to the member state concerned was not compatible with the Treaty of the European Union or Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union.
