Fall in tax evasion enabling cases highlights UK government’s failure to invest in HMRC

A report this week in the Financial Times showing that HMRC has prosecuted only eight cases for enabling tax evasion in the past two years has highlighted the UK government’s failure to invest in its tax agency.

Following a Freedom of Information request, the FT found there had been a drop from the 43 prosecutions brought by HMRC in the two years before the Covid-19 pandemic.
