Family court cases on the rise

The family courts were busy than previous years in the last quarter of 2020, with a six percent rise in the number of new cases.

In total 68,634 new cases were started.

This increase was due to increases in most case types: domestic violence (21 percent), financial remedy (eight percent), matrimonial (five percent) and private law (three percent) cases.

However, there was a three percent decrease in public law case starts.

Annually, there were 264,091 new cases started in family courts throughout 2020, similar to 2019.
