HMRC data shows fall in number of taxpayers

Data provided by HMRC shows that the number taxpayers fell by 200,000 to 32.5 million in the year 2019/20.

According to analysis from Hargreaves Landsdown, the fall is largely because of the five percent rise in the personal allowance outstripping wage rises. 

The number of higher rate taxpayers also fell by 400,000 to 3.8 million, again because of the 8 percent threshold increase. However, freezing the additional rate tax threshold at £150,000 pushed 22,000 more ...
