Luxembourg referred to ECJ for failing to transpose EU rules on seizing criminals' profits

The European Commission has decided to refer Luxembourg to the European Court of Justice (ECJ) for failing to transpose EU rules on the freezing and confiscation of proceeds of crime into its domestic law.

At the same time, the European Commission has requested the court to order the payment of financial penalties.

EU member states were required to transpose the Directive by 4 October 2016. The Commission launched the infringement procedure against Luxembourg in November 2016 and followed up with a reasoned opinion in March 2019.
