Peter Pan branded Manx coins raise over £250,000 for charity

News Team, 14/11/2019

Isle of Man coins featuring characters and quotes from Peter Pan have helped to raise £250,000 for Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH).

Treasury member with responsibility for currency Bill Henderson MLC and representatives from the Isle of Man government currency partners Westminster Collection and Tower Mint presented a cheque in London earlier this month.

The coins were circulated on the Isle of Man in early July and a proportion of each coin sold being donated to GOSH.

They were launched by GOSH patient Olivia Dawson, who has Williams Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder, and Treasury Member Ralph Peake MHK in June to mark the 90th anniversary of JM Barrie gifting Peter Pan’s rights to GOSH.

Mr Henderson commented: “It’s been a privilege to present this cheque today and pay tribute to the magnificent work which takes place here at Great Ormond Street Hospital.

“The story of Peter Pan is an enduring classic, remaining popular across the generations, and it was regarded as an honour when the Isle of Man was asked to be the country of issue for these exceptional coins.”

Available to buy from Manx National Heritage, Tynwald Library, the Isle of Man Post Office and other local retailers, the collection is made up of six coins, each featuring a character and quote from the book.
