Monday

Saffery Champness Registered Fiduciaries – the winner of The Private Client Trust Company (Independent) category at the 2022 eprivateclient Excellence Awards – had a big year. Lisa Vizia, a director and head of the firm’s family office team in Guernsey, explained to eprivateclient the year the firm had and shared the philosophy behind its reputation for recruitment and retention.

Trust services provider Ocorian appointed Gavin James as chief financial officer as part of its growth strategy. Mr James has experience in both private equity backed and publicly listed businesses in a range of industries such as professional services, technology, manufacturing, software, and business process outsourcing.

Tuesday

HMRC believed 64 percent of Premier League footballers’ contracts were open to abuse, according to data from law firm Pinsent Masons. Research showed the same agent represented both the football player and the club in 494 of 769 contract negotiations in the last Premier League season.

International multi-family office Stonehage Fleming appointed Michael Solomon and Dena Brumpton to its group board. Michael Solomon joined the group board in April, following the completion of Stonehage Fleming’s acquisition of Maitland’s private client services business.

Wednesday

Wealthy Brits were leaving the UK to escape rising taxes, according to tax consultancy firm Forbes Dawson. The Manchester-based firm believed the number of enquiries from people looking to escape the UK owing to a rise in taxes increased “fourfold” since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2019.

Wealth management and professional services provider Evelyn Partners appointed Charlotte Davies as its next general counsel. She will also join the group’s executive committee. Ms Davies will take over from Nicola Mitford-Slade who is retiring after a handover period.

Thursday

Advisers were concerned about clients risking HMRC fines by failing to register trusts with the Trust Registration Service (TRS) by the deadline, according to research from HSBC Life.  Due to incoming rules, any express trust must register details of the settlors, trustees, and beneficiaries with the TRS by 1 September 2022. Any trusts created after this date will have 90 days to register.

2022 eprivateclient Excellence Awards’ winning firm Ocorian made two senior hires to its newly established strategic client group with the appointments of Jamie Gleeson and James Kent. The pair joined chief commercial officer, Simon Behan’s newly established group, focused on maximising client cross-sell opportunities and delivering Ocorian’s five service offerings to each client relationship.

Friday

UK accountancy firm Wilson Wright acquired the tax business of Fleet Street-based C Hoare & Co, the UK's oldest private bank. As part of the acquisition, C Hoare & Co’s four-strong team of tax professionals joined Wilson Wright’s private client tax team.

More than one in four of those in work were permitted to operate abroad for weeks at a time, according to a recent survey. A poll commissioned by property investment firm Castleforge analysed changing perceptions of work and holidays in the post-pandemic world.
