UK Government announces increase to statutory legacy on intestate estates

The UK statutory legacy for those dying intestate is set to increase from £250,000 to £270,000 from 6 February 2020, the government has stated.

This is in line, although four months late, with the Government’s promise to raise the statutory legacy in line with the consumer price index, at least every five years

The statutory legacy applies to a deceased individual without a valid Will but with both a spouse and children. It dictates how much the spouse receives, which currently stands at: £250,000; all the deceased’s personal chattels; and half of the remainder of the deceased’s estate with the remaining half p...
