Monday

Rob Jones has been appointed as interim director general of the National Economic Crime Centre, the joint unit housed within the National Crime Agency (NCA) responsible for  coordinating the UK’s response to economic crime. He officially took up the role on Monday 1 November, covering for Graeme Biggar CBE who the Home Secretary appointed as Director General of the NCA earlier this month.

In January 2022, Japan’s Ministry of Justice will implement a new policy that aims to improve the transparency of Japanese companies by disclosing the identity of their major investors. The move is a response by the MOJ to the evaluation report of the Financial Action Task Force published in August 2021. 

Tuesday

KPMG in the UK has appointed Dean Brown as a partner and Shelley Doorey-Williams as an associate partner in its wealth and asset management practice. Mr Brown will support the growth of KPMG’s technology enablement capability while Ms Doorey-Williams will advise on the transformation agendas of the firm’s wealth clients.

58 percent of UK adults admit they have never discussed inheritance matters with their loved ones – with the reluctance to do so equally split between men and women. A poll of 3,000 nationally representative UK adults commissioned by wealth manager, Brewin Dolphin, revealed that the main reason people shy away from it is because they don’t believe they have enough assets to consider it worthwhile (18 percent).

Wednesday

Anderson Anderson & Brown (AAB), a Scottish business critical services group has announced a merger with Leeds-based independent accountancy firm Sagars to expand its UK regional presence in line with its growth plans. The two firms are on track to deliver a combined £40m+ revenue in the current financial year.

 According to Amy Harvey, Of Counsel at firm Peters & Peters, whilst the full extent of the fallout from Covid-19 on the global economy is yet to be seen, history has shown that recessions often uncover and act as a catalyst for fraud.

Thursday

Belfast law firm MKB Law promoted three of its solicitors to the position of associate directors, reflecting ongoing expansion of the firm which provides legal guidance to corporate, commercial and individual clients in Northern Ireland. Residential property specialist Emma Smyth, family law solicitor Aine Toner, and corporate and commercial property lawyer Lynsey Henderson have now become associate directors.

The head of Mexico’s Financial Intelligence Unit resigned after huge amounts of cash were found on guests attending his foreign wedding, hosted in Guatemala. Santiago Nieto was formerly responsible for overseeing Mexico's attempts to crack down on corruption and money laundering. Guatemalan authorities seized $35,000 in cash from a private jet carrying influential guests to the ceremony.

Friday

Jersey Finance’s fundraising week – sponsored by Rathbones – has raised £23,890 for local charities. The ‘Together We Shine Fundraising Week’, which took place at the end of September, saw financial services firms participate in a range of fundraising initiatives to raise funds for local charities via the Association of Jersey Charities.

Men are not significantly better informed than women when it comes to investing, but are much more confident regardless, new research from Hargreaves Lansdown shows. Almost a third of women non-investors in a 2000-person survey said they didn’t invest because they didn’t know enough about it, compared to just over one in five men.
