EU court ruling sees closure of public registers of beneficial ownership

The Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) has ruled that public registers of beneficial ownership of companies within the territory of member states should be closed to the public.

Public registers are part of the anti-money-laundering directive, a Luxembourg law adopted in 2019.

This law established a Register of Beneficial Ownership and provides that a series of information on the beneficial owners of registered entities must be entered and retained in that register. ...
