An abiding characteristic of a good private banker is, of course, that the adviser must be a thorough gentleman - or lady.

Thus, I am heartened to hear that Coutts & Co has come to the rescue of one of its clients, Nicola Roberts, a singer with pop ensemble Girls Aloud.

Her £1.25 million mansion has been taken over by the bank, at her request, after the songstress became financially, er....out of tune.

Well done, Coutts, for hitting such a relationship high note.
