Non-dom investment in UK businesses almost hits £1 billion

Investment in UK businesses by non-domiciled individuals has hit a record high of almost £1 billion, private wealth law firm Boodle Hatfield has claimed.

According to HMRC data for the 2016/17 tax year, non-doms invested £979 million in British businesses through the Business Investment Relief (BIR) scheme, an 8 percent rise on the previous year and an almost fivefold increase on 2012/13, the year it was introduced.

The relief has channelled almost £3.5 billion into UK businesses since it was introduced.

Five hundred non-doms used the relief to invest last year, up from 200 in its first year.
