The top one percent of earners in the UK received a far greater, and faster growing, share of the nation’s income pre-crisis than previously thought, if capital gains are included in official statistics, according to new research published today (21 May).
The research – a collaboration between the Resolution Foundation, LSE and CAGE Research Centre at the University of Warwick – used confidential tax return data to build a fuller picture of incomes across the UK, specifically by including taxable capital gains.
