Australia rules that image rights income must be paid directly by celebrities

The Australian government has ruled that income derived from image rights belongs to the individual with fame and not a related entity.

The ruling was covered in a draft tax determination - Income tax: use of an individual’s fame by related entities, for consultation.

The aim of the draft tax determination was to help individuals with fame understand the potential tax implications when a related entity authorises the use of their fame to other entities for a fee.
