James Austen, a senior associate in Charles Russell Speechlys' private client department, has been appointed as a Judge of the First-tier Tribunal, assigned to the Tax Chamber, where he will sit on a part-time basis.
As a Tribunal judge, Mr Austen will hear and determine appeals against decisions by Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) in respect of both direct and indirect taxes.
Mr Austen will combine his judicial office with his practice at the firm, where he specialises in tax and trust advice to individuals and trustees - particularly those with rural estates and business interests.
