How can cohabiting couples protect themselves in the event of a split?

Recent statistics revealed that marriage rates are now the lowest on record, while cohabiting couples are the fastest growing family type. While this is not surprising, couples are potentially leaving themselves in a vulnerable position by cohabiting rather than marrying.

Contrary to belief, common law marriage does not exist in England and Wales, meaning a lot of couples are left without the rights they thought they have.
