Non-residents in Australia are set to lose the capital gains tax (CGT) main residence exemption. Australia's federal government has tabled a bill to prevent foreign and temporary tax residents claiming the main residence exemption from capital gains tax. The Bill resurrects legislation that was first put forward in 2017 but lapsed when the 2019 election was called. It sets new commencement and grandfathering dates for its effects, as well as certain exclusions.
