Monday

Swiss-headquartered trust and fiduciary services provider Accuro expanded its London offering to regulated trust and fiduciary services, bringing on board a chief people officer for the group. Mustafa Hussain has been appointed as managing director of the Accuro London office, having joined Accuro in January 2019 from Taylor Wessing.

On 1 January 2022, The Inheritance Tax (Delivery of Accounts) (Excepted Estates) (Amendment) Regulations 2021 came into effect. The 2004 regulations were extended, so that the majority of non-taxpaying estates are no longer required to complete IHT forms in cases where a grant is required. The new regulations serve to minimise the administrative burdens imposed on those dealing with IHT.

Tuesday

Multi-jurisdictional offshore law firm Carey Olsen hired Rachel Yao to continue the expansion of its trusts and private wealth offering in the Asia-Pacific region. Ms Yao has joined the firm's Singapore office, having most recently worked in Taylor Wessing's private wealth team in Greater China.

Private wealth is facing a rising tide of red tape and regulation this year through new laws and increased enforcement of pre-existing legislation, according to partners in law firm Macfarlances private client disputes and corporate crime and investigations teams

Wednesday

Global fiduciary services provider IQ-EQ appointed Rebecca Brown as new head of legal, UK, Ireland & Crown Dependencies to provide legal advice as the regional sector continues to grow. Ms Brown qualified as a UK solicitor in 2012 and has a wide range of in-house and private practice experience.

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer (Freshfields) is among the first law firms to launch a Menopause Policy in the UK. The scheme - effective from 1 February - offers paid benefits to staff experiencing the menopause.

Thursday

Private client veteran Craig Kemsley  joined tax advisory firm Mark Davies & Associates as a partner. The former London head of private clients at UK accountancy firm Grant Thornton was most recently head of tax and legacy at legal services business, Calibrate Law.

Laura Burrow, associate at Collyer Bristow, wrote on mediation. With the UK government investing over £3 million into family mediation since March 2021 and many families able to claim up to £500 towards the cost of mediation (if they are eligible), it is hoped that more families will be able to reach amicable solutions out of court.

Friday 

Offshore law firm Ogier expanded its international footprint with the opening of a new representative office in Beijing, becoming the first firm of its kind in the Chinese capital. The Beijing office opens five months after the launch of Ogier Global in Singapore, with Ogier offices in East Asia also operating in Hong Kong, Shanghai and Tokyo.

Family law solicitor, collaborative lawyer, and mediator Farhana Shahzady launched the Family Law Menopause Project. The project aims to raise awareness amongst the family law community on the impact of menopause so that family lawyers can ensure that their advice leads to the best financial outcome for female clients as they approach retirement.
