Valentine's special: The private wealth sector's power couples

Katie Royals, 14/02/2022

The private wealth industry is a small community, often descrived as being very close knit. But, for some, it is even closer.

As it's Valentine's Day, we thought we would celebrate some of the couples taking the private wealth sector by storm...

Helena and Richard Morrissey

While only Helena is in wealth management – she was formerly the chief executive of Newton Investment Management and is now on the board of AJ Bell, among other roles – it’s hard not to include this pair.

Richard previously worked as a financial journalist before leaving his job when he was 35 to raise the couple’s nine children.

Gina and Alan Miller

The ultimate wealth management power couple, the pair founded SCM, which stands for ‘Smart, Common Sense and Modern’, in 2008 in the midst of the financial crash and have been going strong ever since.

Made famous for their legal battles with arch Brexiteers, the word on the street is that without Alan and Gina, there would be no MiFID II.

Catherine Grum and Bill McGilivray

Catherine and Bill are both former eprivateclient Top 35s Under 35 and are still at the forefront of the private client industry.

Catherine is now a partner and head of family office services at BDO, while Bill is head of client development at Ogier. Previously, Bill was a business development director for Jersey Finance in London.

Simon and Rebecca Goldring

Simon is a partner and co-head of the London private client team at law firm McDermott Will & Emery. While Rebecca was most recently an associate at Pennington Manches Cooper. She took a step back in June 2020 to look after their children full time.

Katie and Alexis Pateras

Katie is marketing & communications director at UBS Global Wealth Management and Alexis is a relationship manager at Deutsche Bank.

Previously, Alexis also worked at UBS, as an UHNW adviser. He was previously a PAM Top 40 Under 40.

Nick Lawes and Philippa Kohler

Nick is managing director at Brooks Macdonald Financial Consulting and Philippa is operations director there too.

Jonathan and Kirsten Burt

Jonathan was in the original cohort of the PAM Top 40 Under 40 in 2010, when he was a managing director at Barclays Wealth. Now he is a partner within the private capital group at Harbottle & Lewis.

Kirsten now runs her own consultancy but before this was an executive director at UBS in the firm’s UK and Jersey wealth management division.

Adam and Annmarie Carvalho

Adam was a contentious trusts and estates partner at Farrer & Co until April 2021, while Annmarie also worked at Farrer & Co for over a decade where she trained as a family solicitor and mediator.

She left in 2018 to found The Carvalho Consultancy, which provides individual and couple therapy together with coaching and training for lawyers on mental health and psychology. Adam left Farrer & Co to join the business as a career coach.
