Valentine’s special: The couples taking the private client world by storm

Katie Royals, 12/02/2021

The private client and wealth management profession is often described as a close knit community, but for some it is even closer.

As Valentine’s Day fast approaches, we thought we’d celebrate some of the industry’s power couples. Who said post-Covid taxation policy can’t be romantic?

Gina and Alan Miller

One of the best known couples, the pair founded SCM, which stands for ‘Smart, Common Sense and Modern’, in 2008 in the midst of the financial crash and have been going strong ever since.

Made famous for taking the government to court over their handling of Brexit, these two really scream power couple.

Gina’s latest battle appears to be holding FCA chief executive Andrew Bailey to account for failing to prevent the London Capital & Finance scandal.

Adam and Annmarie Carvalho

Adam is a contentious trusts and estates partner at Farrer & Co, while Annmarie also worked at Farrer & Co for over a decade where she trained as a family solicitor and mediator.

She left in 2018 to found The Carvalho Consultancy, which provides individual and couple therapy together with coaching and training for lawyers on mental health and psychology.

Jonathan Conder and Beatrice Puoti

Beatrice - a 2021 eprivateclient 50 Most Influential – is a partner and head of private wealth at law Burges Salmon and Jonathan is a partner and head of the private client group at Macfarlanes. They make quite the legal power couple.

Catherine Grum and Bill McGilivray

Catherine and Bill are both former eprivateclient Top 35s Under 35s and are still at the forefront of the private client industry.

Catherine was recently appointed as a partner and head of family office services at BDO, while Bill is head of client development at Ogier.

Katrina and Nick Williams

Nick is a partner at Ogier, while Katrina is a director at R&H Trust Company in Jersey. These two have the offshore sector covered.

Helena and Richard Morrissey

While only Helena is in wealth management – she was formerly the chief executive of Newton Investment Management and is now on the board of St James’s Place, among other roles – it’s hard not to include this pair.

Richard previously worked as a financial journalist before quitting his job when he was 35 to raise their nine children.

Jonathan and Kirsten Burt

Jonathan was in the original cohort of the PAM Top 40 Under 40 in 2010, when he was a managing director at Barclays Wealth. Now he is a partner within the private capital group at law firm Harbottle & Lewis.

Kirsten now runs her own consultancy but before this was an executive director at UBS in the firm’s UK and Jersey wealth management division.

Nick Lawes and Philippa Kohler

Nick is managing director at Brooks Macdonald Financial Consulting and Philippa is an operations director at the same firm.

Katie and Alexis Pateras

Katie is marketing and communications director at UBS Wealth Management, where Alexis also worked until last year. He is now an ultra high net worth adviser at Deutsche Bank Wealth Management. Previously, Alexis was a PAM Top 40 Under 40.

Simon and Rebecca Goldring

Simon is a partner and London head of private client at law firm McDermott Will & Emery. While Rebecca was most recently an associate at Pennington Manches Cooper. She took a step back in June 2020 to look after their children full time.
