Divorces plummet by 29.5 percent following mandatory waiting period introduction

Divorces fell by 29.5 percent in 2022, representing the lowest number of divorces since 1971, according to figures released by the Office of National Statistics (ONS).

There were 78,759 opposite-sex divorces, a decrease of 29.6 percent from 2021. 

Same-sex divorces also decreased to 1,298 in 2022, representing a decrease of 17.4 percent compared to the year prior.
