HMRC whistle-blowers up 63 percent

The number of whistle-blowers reporting tax evasion to HMRC has increased by 63 percent.

This resulted in total payments of £473,000 in 2019/20, up from £290,250 the previous year. However, the number of awards made for those exposing tax evasion is not known.

This is arguably a surprisingly small amount, given that the UK tax gap for 2018/2019 stood at £31 billion, of which £5.6 billion was attributable to tax evasion.

HMRC does not report specifically on the additional taxes collected relating to whistleblower payments, although its payment scheme is subject to regulatory oversight.
