Proposed 'death tax' halted by Parliament suspension

Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s prorogation of Parliament has halted several items of pending legislation including the introduction of a “death tax.”

The drastic rise in probate fees set out in the Draft Non-Contentious Probate (Fees) Order 2018 has been scheduled for a vote in the House of Commons since February.

This motion increases probate fees from the current fixed fee of £215 by almost 3,000 percent for large estates.

The proposal has not proven popular with the private client industry...
