Monday

Law firm Stewarts promoted eight senior associates to the partnership and two to legal director in its “largest ever” partner promotions round. The eight new partners were Emma Holland in trust and probate litigation; Sophie Chapman and Lucy Gould in divorce and family; Anna Wiseman in personal injury; Alison Goldney and Amy Heath in clinical negligence; and Pia Mithani and Zachary Sananes in commercial litigation.

Giving more British expats the right to vote in UK elections may come with a “tax sting in the tail”, tax and advisory firm Blick Rothenberg warned. In the Spring Budget, the government confirmed that British expats living overseas and non-resident in the UK for tax purposes would be entitled to vote in British elections in future on an “indefinite basis” and Robert Salter, a tax director at the firm, warned British expats overseas to consider carefully whether they wish to take advantage of this extended franchise because “it could cause problems in the future and mean that they are liable for UK taxes and in particular inheritance tax.” 

Tuesday

A daughter was granted permission to administer her mother’s estate after a legal battle with a professional executor ended with the High Court refusing their application to appeal. UK law firm Irwin Mitchell was instructed by the client in relation to her mother’s estate, who wrote a will in 2011 and passed away in 2018. The will was held by law firm WAG Davidson & Co. The deceased left her property to her grandson, and the rest of her estate to her daughter. The net estate was valued at around £832,000.

Jersey headquartered consultancy firm Enhance Group rehired its co-founder Richard Sayers. Following a period of investment in proprietary technology, Mr Sayers has been appointed as client services director. Before launching Enhance in 2005, he worked in discretionary portfolio management at Barclays Wealth. He left Enhance in 2017 to become managing director at Equiom in Singapore. 

Wednesday

Charles Russell Speechlys grew its Hong Kong offering with the relocation of real estate partner Simon Green to lead the firm’s focus in Asia and the hiring of two partners from Stephenson Harwood. Having previously led the law firm’s Dubai office, Mr Green has become the firm’s head of real estate, hotels & hospitality for Asia and the Middle East. Mr Green’s relocation followed the recruitment of a private wealth and commercial real estate team, led by partners Silvia On and Ian Devereux, who join the firm on 21 April and 3 May 2021 respectively.

International legal and corporate services firm Hatstone announced the establishment of its European hub in Ireland, adding the partners and staff of Tully Rinckey (Ireland) into the group. Specialising in finance, corporate and commercial law and dispute resolution across offices in Jersey, the BVI, London, Panama, South Africa and now Ireland, the opening of the firm’s Dublin office is part of its European growth strategy and was driven by requests made by a number of clients post-Brexit, who want to invest in or through Ireland, maintaining a presence in the EU.

Thursday

The furore surrounding text messages between the UK prime minister and a then Singapore-based billionaire show that specialist skilled workers should not be caught by the UK’s tax rules if it is in the national interest, and relaxations to the UK’s statutory residence tax rules should be made permanent, an eprivateclient 50 Most Influential claimed.

UK law firm Fladgate appointed Sunil Sheth as senior partner, effective 1 April 2021. He replaced Richard Reuben and is the first BAME senior partner at the UK law firm. Mr Sheth joined the firm in 2003 and is currently a partner in the firm’s corporate practice. 

Friday

Former eprivateclient Top 35 Under 35 Lewis Edwards joined law firm Hunters from rivals BDB Pitmans. He arrived at Hunters this month having spent nine years at BDB Pitmans where he was named a Top 35 Under 35 in 2013. Prior to BDB Pitmans, Mr Edwards worked and trained at London law firm Payne Hicks Beach.

Research from digital coaching provider, Ezra, revealed that bagging an Oscar at this weekend’s Academy Awards could boost the winner’s net worth by as much as 310 percent.
