There are some rum old brands in private banking, corporate names of such utter obscurity that you would never associate them with our precious wealth business.

Standard Life uses the hopeless 1825 financial planning moniker, for example. And the Germans, as always, can be relied on for some real corkers, like Baader Wertpapierhandelsbank.

Another splendid example was KBL epb, something that sounded like a consumptive Belgian coughing really deeply.

The longer version for this Luxembourg banking group was not much better – KBL European Private Bankers.

Now the KBL owners, the royal Al Thani family ...
