Following the break in stamp duty on home purchases, homebuyers in England saved £4.6 billion that otherwise would have been paid to the UK government.
The stamp duty holiday ran from July 2020 to September 2021, as a ploy by Chancellor Rishi Sunak to keep the home buying sector afloat. Research by property app MoveStreets of 776,189 property transactions during this time showed that the South East of England was the region with the largest amount of savings, at £1.2 billion.
