As Mother’s Day approaches, and people think of ways they can show appreciation for their mothers, it’s timely to consider that many are suffering a pension penalty - a large gap in what they can expect from their pension after having children.

The average pension pot for a 65-year-old woman in the UK is £35,800, one-fifth of that for the average 65-year-old man.
