Hammond urges Brexit compromise in Spring statement

Chancellor Philip Hammond made his Spring Statement in the long shadow of chaotic Brexit negotiations today, painting a dire picture of the predicted impact of a no-deal exit on the UK economy.

Mr Hammond acknowledged growth would be lower this year than predicted in his Autumn Budget, but that cumulative growth over the next five years was predicted to be slightly higher than expected.

Growth was on track for 1.2 percent this year, rising to 1.4 percent in 2020 and 1.6 percent a year for the three prior years. Growth for 2021 to 2023 had formerly been set slightly lower.
