Landed gentry struggle under Covid income slump

The UK’s landed estates are being hit hard by a drop in income due to the coronavirus lockdown, according to a firm that advises more than 150 of the largest estates and families.

John Lamb Hill Oldridge said that estates with a house and garden that would have usually been open to the public have been shut since late March resulting in no entrance fee income and no tourist retail spend in their shops or café.

Many had also seen a loss in rental income as tenants struggled to afford rents, alongside holiday property income and a lack of events revenue, such as weddings or festivals.
