Lifetime Achievement Award

John Elder

John Elder was a member of the inaugural PAM Judging Panel in 2001 while managing director at Ernst & Young Investment Consulting.

He stood down from the Panel after the first year, having been appointed director of investment management at Newton Private Investment Management, but accepted the Panel’s invitation to rejoin in 2005, after being appointed to lead the development of BNY Mellon’s Family Office Services business in the EMEA region.

Thereafter, Mr Elder remained an ever present member of the PAM Judging Panel until the summer of 2022, when he stepped aside, because of ill health. He sadly passed away in January this year.

“John made a very significant contribution to the ongoing evolution of the PAM Awards programme over the best part of two decades,” said James Anderson, chair of the PAM Judging Panel and the founder of PAM Insight.

“He was a highly respected investment consultant and his expert technical knowledge meant he was able to ask the right searching questions of PAM Awards entrants. He also played a vital role in identifying new Award categories, such as the recent Challenger Award, as well as giving his time freely to encourage potential winners to enter.”

Contribution to Wealth Management Award

Ian Orton

Speaking about Ian Orton, Mr Anderson said: "If you subscribe to thewealthnet, you will know him as a perennial observer of our little world of wealth management, with a slide-rule in his pocket and a razor-like ability to slice through even the most cunningly contrived press release.

"A student of Edinburgh and Herriot Watt universities, he became one of two in-house economists in the House of Commons, serving the Treasury Select Committee. I met him in 1996 when he was editor of Private Banker International. Happily, we had a meeting of minds about the need for a publication that served a broader wealth management and advisory community and he agreed to join me as editor of Wealth Management Magazine and – a few years later – its online successor, thewealthnet

"He has been the keeper of the sector's corporate memory – and, for some, it's leading sector analyst – for more than 25 years.

"Blessed with an extraordinary power of recall, even after many hours of quenching his thirst at cocktail receptions, he has still been known to recount word for word the detailed conversations of the night before. This is a talent we all wish we had!

"For a generation of chief executives modest enough to listen, he has helped them to understand the history, culture and skeleton cupboards of the organisations they have led, as well as the nuances of the broader trends and developments across the sector.

"At times an irascible commentator, he has never been someone to be taken lightly. For those who take the time to read his musings, his insights on the world of wealth management are invaluable – and will doubtless remain long lasting."
