Alison Rose, head of RBS's commercial and private banking business, has been promoted to the role of deputy chief executive of NatWest, the retail banking arm of the Edinburgh-based bank.
The appointment has sparked speculation that Ms Rose is becoming well positioned to succeed RBS chief executive Ross McEwan. Mr McEwan, who has headed RBS since 2013, has said he will stay until least 2020.
Her new role “sets her up as the internally-preferred candidate,” one source, familiar with RBS said.
