Santander has issued a warning on scammers impersonating HMRC, with rates of this fraud increasing 138 percent increase in Q1 2021 compared with Q1 2020, according to the bank’s data.
In this scam, the fraudster will contact the customer through email, text, phone or WhatsApp claiming to be from HMRC, the police or a court. The contact details, such as the caller ID, can be easily made to appear genuine through number spoofing.
