PAM's inaugural 'Top 40' ten years on: Louise Hartley of Citi Private Bank

News Team, 24/04/2020

PAM’s Top 40 Under 40 initiative has now been recognising the up-and-coming stars in private client wealth management for ten years.

At the launch in 2010, thewealthnet published that the inaugural list proved "there is no dearth of talent in this crucial and high profile area of the financial services industry", a sentiment that is still proven to be true in our 2020 edition, released in March. The initiative attracts hundreds of nominations.

To celebrate the 10-year anniversary, we are running a series of articles looking at the continued success of our original constituents.

Today we speak with Louise Hartley, managing director and team leader of the UHNW UK team at Citi Private Bank.

When Ms Hartley was nominated in 2010, she was on maternity leave with her first child – now 11 years old and almost as tall as her mother.

At the time Ms Hartley was about three years into her career with Citi and working as a relationship manager, having joined in 2007 from Coutts.

She has since been promoted twice and has co-founded the Citi Private Bank Women EMEA network (more on this soon).

How has the private wealth management sector changed over the last ten years?

Over the last 10 years we have seen consolidation in the wealth management sector, driven by the cost of increased regulation and tax compliance following the financial crisis.

All institutions have therefore had to carefully assess and re-define their target market and therefore the UHNW clients and families that Citi serves, really do need the global platform and presence that we can offer.

What do you enjoy most about your current role?

One of the most enjoyable aspects of my role has always been working with some of the UKs leading entrepreneurs and their families. It is a privilege to understand the story of their route to success including the risks that were taken to create and grow their businesses.

It’s also very rewarding to work with the next generation of the family, as they navigate the subsequent stage of their wealth creation and succession.

Another aspect of my role which is satisfying is leading a team of bankers within the UK business - helping to drive and shape the strategy and ongoing success of our business at Citi Private Bank.

What piece of advice would you give your younger self?

I co-founded and co-chair the Citi Private Bank Women EMEA network, helping to hire and nurture female talent within the business, as well as driving our business connection with female clients.

I would therefore tell my younger self to keep working hard, but also to look for ways to take on more responsibility earlier and to put your hand up more often (even if you are not 100 percent sure you have the answer or all of the skills).

Ten years ago I had just had my first baby (I now have two children), so I would also advise my younger self to continue to cherish the work life balance and help be a role model for others.
