Sterling rallies as Labour backs general election

The leader of the opposition, Jeremy Corbyn, has stated Labour will back a general election, sending sterling rallying and making the possibility of a December election ever more likely.

It is now widely predicted that an election will take place between 9 and 12 December 2019. This would make it the first festive election since 1923.

Edward Park, deputy chief investment officer (CIO) at Brooks Macdonald, explained the increase in sterling is due to “the hope that a new parliament will provide more Brexit clarity”.
