“The only function of economic forecasting is to make astrology look respectable," JK Galbraith, an irreverent American economist declared many decades ago.

The fact is that attempting to forecast the behaviour of large complex open systems, such as a national or global economy with any degree of precision, let alone accuracy, is virtually impossible.
